OK, so I happened to stop by the Trader Joe’s on Excelsior Blvd in St. Louis Park last Saturday, and lo and behold there was a 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape under the label of J.L. Quinson selling for about $10. I thought, “No way,” so I checked with one of the guys in the store and he said it was awesome. So I picked up a bottle thinking, “Well, it should be a very good Côtes du Rhône.”

It is…and more.

Yes, I was turned off by its recent vintage, its still undeveloped youth. But damn! It had color, substance, body, fruit—in short, anything one would want in a good, albeit young, grenache-based wine. Far better than anything I have had from Spain in the same price range.

So it has had little or no barrel aging. But it’s excellently made and certainly reflective of what the appellation in a good vintage can offer.

Why is it so cheap? My only guess is that as well as being a very good to great vintage, 2009 also produced a surplus of juice. The J.L. Quinson label is owned by the venerable firm Pasquier DesVignes, owned by the Quinson family and located in Romanèche-Thorins, the home also of the sprawling Georges Duboeuf wine enterprise. My supposition is that Pasquier DesVignes had the juice by previous contract with growers—not uncommon in the wine business—and that cash upfront for the recent vintage was better than waiting around for the wine to age, putting it up against more well-known producers.

The upshot? A chance for us peons who prize good wine from good appellations to secure it at a too-cheap-to-believe price.

Is the wine drinkable now? You betcha. Will it be drinkable and enjoyable in 5 or 10 years? Ditto. While oak aging, which this wine lacks, adds a certain something to many wines—notably Bordeaux, Burgundy, Napa Cabernets, Italian reds and more—because of the wine’s inherent balance—not too fruity, nor too tart, nor too tannic—the oak is not so much missed.

Bottom line: If you’re near a Trader Joe’s, buy this wine. Buy a case of this wine. Lay it away in a good cellar. For $10 a bottle, you (and your progeny, if you are an old fart like me) will be more than rewarded.

If it’s a German Piesporter Michelsberg Spätlese, YES!

I recently had a 2003 Josef Friederich Piesporter Michelsberg Spätlese Riesling. A 2003, you say? And you drank it in 2010? Yes. This wine is proof that a high-sugar content white wine CAN age and remain drinkable for quite a while (quite a while in the life of a white, anyway).

This Piesporter Michelsberg Spätlese is from the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region, and has an alcohol content of 8.5%. It’s a beautiful straw-to-golden yellow color with a medium depth and yet quite clear. Its nose is moderate with scents of honey and peach. As one may parse, this is a sweet riesling with a medium body and smooth acidity. Along with low tannins, this is a VERY drinkable wine, and best served alone. The flavors consist of honey, peach and even a hint of citrus and pear with a nice, long finish. I was surprised by how flavorful and complex this wine has remained in seven years of aging.

All in all, a very nice surprise! It’s sweet, flavorful with a very slight effervescence, and out of a 5-star rating I give it 3.5-4. So if you find yourself with a German riesling that you might think is past its prime, open it and give it a try! I know I will.

One thing many wine drinkers do not do is really look at a young wines ability to transform over the course of a few days. The 2004 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée du Quet was not a good wine on day one or two but really opened up for business on day three and four. Had I drank the bottle on the in first couple of days I would have not been a buyer of the wine, but seeing the potential I will buy a few more and cellar for five plus years.

2004 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée du Quet

Region: France > Rhône > Southern Rhône > Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Color: Medium color

Day One Review

Date Tasted: 2/19/2010
Nose: Spice, raspberries, and earth
Taste: On the palate spice, leather, spice, and some sweet fruit
Finish: Finish is really disappointing
Evaluation: I hope this improves the next day (88 pts.)

Day Two Review

Date Tasted: 2/20/2010
Nose: Tar, leather, spices, and floral
Taste: Palate shows heavy spices which throw off the wines overall balance
Finish: Medium finish
Evaluation: Really not my style. It is better then day one (88 pts.)

Day Four Review

 Date Tasted: 2/22/2010
Nose: Aromas of white pepper, garrique, spices, raspberries and truffles
Taste: On the palate dirt, spices, garrique, pepper, raspberries and leather
Finish: Medium finish that is much less tannic then day one
Evaluation: The wine has really opened up and I really like the wine. I am always amazed and the transformation of good wine. (92 pts.)

Have fun experimenting with wine!

Cheers,

Last Friday I had the pleasure of having my first glass of the 2009 Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau with a small group of friends. While I did anticipate tasting it for the first time, I was still skeptical due to my past experiences with the Duboeuf, because in past years it hasn’t been what I would call ‘drinkable’ due to flaws like bitterness and even mustiness. But all 2009 Beaujolais are supposed to be the best in fifty years. Yes, 50 years! This is due to excellent growing conditions such as weather and overall climate. On our Beaujolais Nouveau podcast, we tasted a Beaujolais Villages Nouveau, which was very good, and I looked forward to comparing it to the Duboeuf.

Tasting: 2009 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau

Price: Under $10.00
Varietal: 100% Gamey
Region: France > Beaujolais

Ahhh. The Duboeuf this year is excellent. It’s light, smooth, and totally drinkable. And while it has overall less complexity as the Villages Nouveau, it really surprised me. The light fruit flavors combined with its smooth drinkability makes this year’s Duboeuf Nouveau one of the best I’ve had in years. But the ‘best’ in 50 years? With only a handfull of previous nouveaus under my belt, I can honestly say this year’s is easily the best of them. This wine pairs with most any food, which makes it a ‘no-brainer’ when choosing a wine to share with friends and family at any get-together. And it’s easily approachable for those who usually don’t drink wine, especially red wine.

Nouveaus are meant to be drunk young, so don’t hold on to a nouveau for long. Watch for the nouveaus to be on sale at the end of the year, for this reason. But watch out for older vintages past this year’s vintage, as most nouveaus have at most a year’s shelf life.

2000 Edmeades Zinfandel

Price: $35 (sale price $14)
Varietal: Zinfandel
Region: United States > California > North Coast > Mendocino County

Wow! A big, rich, powerful full-bodied Zinfandel; very dense in color with a intoxicating nose of berry jam. I could have almost inhaled this wine as opposed to drink it. For being such a powerful red, I did not expect the finish to be as smooth as it was. While containing a high alcohol content of 16.4%, it was perfectly balanced and not overpowering.

Lush and decadent with flavors of raspberry, pepper and a hint of dark chocolate, this wine was a welcome surprise. Anyone who enjoys big, bold reds, will love this wine as much as I did.

Several years ago I had the privilege of meeting Stephen Ross Dooley at I wine tasting I was attending. Stephen, a winemaker from California, also happened to be from my hometown in Minnesota. At the time, I was just getting in to wines, and was fascinated by listening to Stephen talk about his career in the wine industry and about establishing his own wine label in 1994, Stephen Ross.

Stephen presented a few of his wines that night, and I fell in love with his Pinot Noir, which seems to be something Stephen Ross specializes in. That night I bought a bottle of his Pinot Noir and, just for the heck of it, a bottle of his Petite Sirah. I quickly drank the Pinot Noir, while the Petite Sirah languished in the back of my wine cooler, that is until last night.

2001 Stephen Ross Petite Sirah

Price: $30 (at the time)
Varietal: Petite Sirah
Region: United States > California > Napa Valley > Thomann Station

Note: Petite Sirah is a completely different grape varietal than Syrah or Shiraz.

This wine was a gorgeous, very dense purple, almost black in color, and when swirled, produced narrow uniform legs. A very thick, full-bodied wine; I was initially overwhelmed by its overpowering nose of alcohol. But after allowing the wine to sit and breathe, it opened up and I detected aromas of ripe fruit like black raspberry and blueberry, with hints of black pepper and mint. It became a much more balanced wine, with a more mellow finish. I was able to appreciate it for its soft tannins and its thick, rich flavors of blackberry and black raspberry fruit, with just a hint of leather.

This Petite Sirah isn’t for everyone. Its high alcohol content, tannins and smokiness, will not be appreciated by those just starting to discover wine or those preferring white wines. But for those of us that enjoy the intense, thick flavors that can only come from full-bodied red wines, this one is worth a try.

Tad’s Rating: Liked It

Stephen Ross is a small wine producer. Their wines can be ordered through their web site, and while not inexpensive, I highly recommend their Pinot Noir.

Last week (October 1st) I attended a wine tasting I discovered on meetup.com. It was held at the Black Dog Café in downtown St. Paul and was the first in their Meetings with the Wine Trade series. Jane Greenheck from Paustis Wine Company shared her passion for French wines.

It was a rainy night that seemed to keep people home and resulted in a very small turnout (6 people). That made for a very intimate experience and discussion. Jane presented six wines, three whites and three reds.

I must admit, I haven’t drunk many French wines before. I think I’ve subconsciously avoided them in favor of lesser known wine regions. I realize now I’ve been doing myself a disservice; all of these wines were extremely drinkable (yes, even the whites).

2008 Hugues Beaulieu Cave de Pomérols Coteaux du Languedoc Picpoul-de-Pinet

Price: $7.99
Varietal: Picpoul Blanc (100% Picpoul de Pinet)
Region: France > Languedoc Roussillon > Languedoc > Coteaux du Languedoc Picpoul-de-Pinet

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this wine. Grown on the Mediterranean coast of France, I found it to be very similar to the Orviéto Classico that we tasted for the first podcast, but even lighter and smoother.

Tad’s Rating: Liked It

2008 Chateau Suau Blanc Bordeaux

Price: $10.99
Varietal: Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend (55% Sauvignon Blanc, 35% Semillon, 10% Muscadelle)
Region: France > Bordeaux > Bordeaux Contrôlée

Wow, another extremely drinkable white. Great depth of fruit with a long finish and nice acidity.

Tad’s Rating: Drinkable

2007 Novellum Chardonnay Vin de Pays des Côtes Catalanes

Price: $9.99
Varietal: Chardonnay (70% stainless steel, 30% barrel-fermented)
Region: France > Languedoc Roussillon > Roussillon > Vin de Pays des Côtes Catalanes

This was the biggest surprise of the night. I loathe Chardonnay, I LOATHE it. But this wine had me completely rethinking my position on Chardonnay. It is almost completely casked in stainless steel, not oak barrels; as you would find in the U.S. This made all the difference; I realize now that it is the oak barrel fermenting that I LOATHE and not necessarily Chardonnay. While still not a favorite, a very, very drinkable wine.

Tad’s Rating: Liked It

<On to the reds:

2006 Chateau Norbert Rouge, Cótes De Bourg

Price: $9.99
Varietal: Merlot (90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon)
Region: France > Bordeaux > Côtes de Bourg

I’ve stayed away from Merlot for quite some time in favor of other reds, but it might be time to rediscover them. This was a carefully crafted wine from an organic vineyard that hand selects its fruit. This hand-made approach translated in to a very nice Merlot with flavors of black cherry and a full, tart finish.

Tad’s Rating: Liked It

2005 Louis Bernard Cótes du Ventoux

Price: $9.99
Varietal: Red Blend (50% Grenache, 50% Syrah)
Region: France

Another nice, very drinkable red wine. It had complex flavors of dark berries and herbs with a strong finish.

Tad’s Rating: Drinkable

2005 Domaine Saint-Benoit Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grande Garde

Price: $30.99
Varietal: Red Rhône Blend
Region: France > Rhône > Southern Rhône > Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The most famous of the Southern Rhône appellation, these wines can be blended with up to thirteen grape varietals. Wines from this region have excellent exposure to the sun and produce some very nice wines, this being one of them. A smokey wine, with hints of spice and raspberry and a nice smooth finish.

Tad’s Rating: Liked It

In closing, this was a very eye-opening tasting. It has caused me to reevaluate French wines and Chardonnay. All the wines were extremely drinkable, and when you factor in the price of the first five, a great value. If you haven’t tasted a French wine in a while, you can’t go wrong with any of these.
